The word hobbies refers to a diversion or something that occupies one's time and thoughts, activities or interests that is pursued outside one's regular occupation for relaxation and pleasure.

A wooden or wickerwork toy that was made to be ridden by children just like a real horse was called a hobby horse. "To ride one's hobby-horse" an expression that came from this hobby horse means "to follow a favorite pastime" from which we derived the word hobby used in the modern term or definition of recreation.
