The word appetizer is also known as hors d'oeuvre and is defined as a first course or starter food items that are served before the main courses or servings of a meal. Appetizers are used to entertain or sustain guests in the time before a meal is served and sometimes are served with no meal afterward as is the custom with many cocktail and reception party events. Appetizers may be part of a sit-down meal and served at a table or they may be offered before sitting down for the main meal. Appetizers or hors d'oeuvres are defined as any food served before the main course, but generally the phrase is referring to individual items not crudités fruit or cheese.
